SEO stands for search engine optimization, the name given to the process of literally optimizing a website or web page for the benefits of search engines like Google, Bing and yahoo.
Google for example state that over two hundred factors are taken into account when they look at a web page. Some of these factors are very simple like the page title. Some are not so simple like the quality score of inbound links to the page and some factors which we don't even know about yet.
Although not identical all the major search engines behave in roughly the same way. One thing we can say for certain is that the more of these factors which you score well on the better your web page is considered by the search engines and the higher your web pages will rank within search results.
Why Use Optimization
Search engines have grown massively since the ninety's and on today's internet where users simply type what they are looking for into google and click on one of the first result returned. It is imperative that a website is not only listed in the search results but that it also ranks highly for its subject matter.
By optimizing a website or web page you are attempting to make it as appealing as possible to search engines. Thereby hopefully the search engines will rank the page or site highly for a specific search term, as a result you will receive more traffic to your site.
What Are My Options
There are really only two type of SEO available to webmasters.
- On page optimization
- Things that feature directly on the web pages of your site and things that are in the direct control of the webmaster. Like specific keywords or key phrases, correct HTML markup, titles and meta data are all areas where on page optimization can be applied.
- Off page optimization
- Includes all other optimizing techniques, thing that are not directly under the control of the webmaster. Like The number of inbound links, directory listings, link anchor texts.
As a general rule, which you will soon discover if you pursue SEO at any length, off page optimizing is much more difficult than on page, as you might expect. Because of this off page optimizing is much more effective.
The basic idea behind this is that webmasters have total control over their own web pages and content and therefore it cannot be 100% relied upon. Webmasters have little or no control over off page factors and therefore they are more reliable for establishing a pages importance, hence the difference.
One thing that is very important to understand before you investigate search engine optimizing in any more depth. There are a great many more myths out there about SEO than there are hard facts.
